How do you choose the right electric tug for your specific needs?

Purchasing an electric tug is a significant investment, whether you work in a warehouse, an airport, on a production floor or a logistics centre. There are different models for different loads and environments, so to make the right choice, you need to understand the scope, the workload and the operational objectives. This guide outlines the key factors to consider in 6 steps.

Step 1: Determine the weight of the loads to be moved

The towing capacity is one of the most important considerations. If you choose an electric tow tug with insufficient power or one that is too light for your load, there is a high chance you will not be able to move the load safely. An electric tug that is too large may be more difficult to manoeuvre in confined spaces and more expensive to purchase than necessary.

  • Light loads (up to 2,000 kg): A compact electric tow tug is ideal: manoeuvrable, efficient and highly suitable for internal use. Think, for example, of retail, hospitals and small warehouses.
  • Medium loads (2,000–8,000 kg): A medium-sized model with higher pulling power can easily be used for regular movements, like in warehouses or at airports.
  • Heavy loads (8,000 kg+): You will need a large industrial electric tow tug with a robust construction and drive system.

Step 2: Identify the main application

V-move electric tugs are versatile, but knowing your main application will help you narrow down your options. Ask yourself: what will this electric tug be moving, and where?

  • Agriculture & horticulture: move harvest trolleys, Danish trolleys, and trolley carrying plants, flowers and other crops easily and ergonomically. Even in narrow greenhouses or warehouses with limited space.
  • Distribution & logistics: prioritise manoeuvrability, a compact turning circle and compatibility with roll containers.
  • Facilities & waste management: move waste bins and compactors safely and cost-effectively. Both indoors and outdoors, on slopes and uneven surfaces.
  • Industry & manufacturing: consider models with a robust drive system and precise speed control for safe manoeuvring around staff and equipment.
  • Aviation & airports: look for models with reliable performance, good traction and compatibility with baggage trolleys, ground service equipment, aircrafts and helicopters.
  • Retail: prioritise manoeuvrability and a compact turning circle.

Step 3: Take the battery’s operating time into account.

One of the most frequently asked questions about electric tugs is whether the battery will last for a full shift. The answer depends on the type of battery (lithium, AGM or lead-acid), its capacity and the intensity of use.

With light and occasional use, power consumption is lower than during continuous heavy-duty work. Therefore, do not just look at the peak capacity, but focus particularly on the electric tiller’s nominal performance under normal working conditions.

For tasks involving multiple shifts, it is best to choose models with a lithium battery. These can be quickly recharged in between shifts for optimal use of your V-move.

Tip: if your electric tug needs to run two or more shifts, opt for a model with a lithium battery that can be recharged in between to avoid interruptions to your work.

Step 4: Assess the working environment

The environment in which you intend to use your electric tug will determine which model is suitable. For example, the requirements for indoor and outdoor use differ considerably.

  • Indoor use: V-move is emission-free, has a low noise level and offers powerful models with a compact footprint.
  • Outdoor use: V-move offers a range of tyres to suit different conditions and requirements. This provides even more options to ensure your electric tow tractor performs optimally.
  • Slopes and/or uneven surfaces: V-move prioritises safety. We test for reliable brakes and stability features and conduct slope tests.

Step 5: Choose the right coupling

The coupling is one of the most important components. The electric tow tractor is only useful if it can be connected to the load. V-move offers versatile coupling systems for different types of loads. You can view these by model in the online brochures.

Do you need a special coupling? That’s no problem. At V-move, you can customise your electric tractor entirely to your own specifications. You can do this by working with one of our specialists to find a custom solution, ensuring the electric tractor is perfectly suited to your specific situation.

Step 6: Buy, Full-service rental or Lease

When purchasing a V-move electric tractor, the purchase price is not the only option. V-move offers three purchase options:

Buy

Electric tugs generally have lower running costs than alternatives with combustion engines: no fuel, fewer service intervals and less often parts replacements. V-move electric tugs are designed for durability and minimal maintenance, ensuring your investment delivers a stable return over the long term.

Full-service rental via V-rent

Would you prefer to avoid a large upfront investment? With V-rent, you can hire a fully configured electric tractor, including service, parts and preventive maintenance, for a fixed monthly fee. Available for terms of 36 to 96 months, this allows you to preserve your working capital and avoid unexpected costs. That way, you know exactly where you stand, from the first day to the last.

Lease

Leasing a V-move electric tug offers a flexible and accessible way to benefit from efficient electric traction, without a large upfront investment. Instead of a one-off purchase, you pay a fixed amount per month, ensuring predictable costs and maintaining liquidity. Furthermore, maintenance and servicing can often be included in the lease contract, ensuring continuity and optimal performance.

Whichever option best suits your organisation, V-move is happy to help you make the right choice.
